Algarve Golf
The Algarve, is only two to three hours flight time from most European capitals, and has been a "must visit" to many golfers for over thirty years. Portugal’s most southerly region is rightly famous for its spectacular scenery and a coastline with sandy beaches and hidden coves. The main golf season is from late autumn to late spring, but courses are open all year around. Winters are mild and golfers from northern European countries can treat their aching joints to warm, sunny days and keep their swings smooth at a time when their home courses are unplayable. Be warned, however, that despite southern Portugal’s appealing sunshine statistics, rain does fall from time to time and nearly all of it during the main golfing season. There are 29 beautifully tended golf courses to be enjoyed, each with it's own challenges.
Although all of the existing courses are close to the coast, the terrain varies from the steep hillsides of Parque da Floresta to the near sea-level flatlands of Vilamoura III and Salgados, which in common with Palmares, includes links holes.
Summer visitors are familiar with the mainly arid Algarve, but you will find the golf courses have been well irrigated by government sponsored and private subterranean water sources and distribution schemes, It is not unusual to find tricky water hazards on some holes adding nicely to the challenge.
